Don’t miss out on a Broadway show while in NYC just because you’ve got the kids. There are plenty of kid-friendly Broadway shows in New York City that the whole family will enjoy.
However, please be aware prior to booking that many theatres on Broadway have a minimum age of 4 for entry – this includes the Disney broadway shows. With many of the shows on Broadway recommending either 6+ or 8+ for entry.
That said, let’s discuss my favourite kid-friendly Broadway shows in New York City.
The Lion King
The Lion King has been on Broadway since 1997 and remains as one of the most popular Broadway shows of all time, winning multiple awards over two decades. It currently plays 8 times a week at the Minskoff Theatre, situated in the heart of Times Square.
Tickets can be purchased online, by phone or in person at the box office. Ticket prices start at around $130 and go right up to $1,000 depending on where you’d like to be seated and when you’d like to watch the performance.
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child
The Harry Potter franchise made its debut on Broadway with Harry Potter And The Cursed Child. This award-winning Broadway show is perfect for families and kids who are already fans of the Harry Potter series.
The show is held at the Lyric Theatre, 214 W 43rd Street, New York. There are two parts to this show, and you can watch either or both depending on your requirements. To learn more I suggest visiting the show’s website.
Frozen on Broadway launched in 2017 and has been an incredible hit. Performances are held every day of the week except Monday at the St. James Theatre.
Tickets for Frozen The Musical start at around $50 and go right up to $200+ depending on where you’d like to sit and the performance availability.
You can book tickets online using the TicketMaster website, via phone or at the box office.
A broadway classic suitable for all the family, albeit possibly a little scary for the younger kids is Wicked. The story is based on Wizard of Oz, albeit from a rather different angle. This is a show Helen and I have had the pleasure of watching on London’s West End and it did not disappoint.
The shows running time is 2 hours 45 minutes, this includes a 15-minute intermission. You can buy tickets at the box office, online or via phone.
Come From Away
Based on a true story, Come From Away tells the tale of how 7,000 stranded passengers situated in Newfoundland after the 9/11 attacks came together to create an incredibly small community and amazing friendships.
The broadway show is hosted every day of the week except Monday’s at the Schoenfeld Theatre on West 45th Street. The performance lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, making it much shorter than some of the other shows on this list and the perfect introduction to the theatre for kids.
Another Disney classic on Broadway suitable for families and kids of all ages is Aladdin. Hosted at the New Amsterdam Theatre, performances are held every day of the week except Tuesdays.
Aladdin began on Broadway back in 2014 and shows no signs of stopping yet. It lasts 2 hours 30 minutes with one 15-minute intermission. Tickets can be purchased via phone, online or at the box office.
The classic teen comedy movie starring Lindsey Lohan made its Broadway debut in 2017 at the August Wilson Theatre. It’s a great kid-friendly broadway show, suitable for tweens and teens upwards.
Tickets for the show start at $79.50 and go right through to around the $200 mark depending on the date, availability and seat location you choose. I recommend booking online so you can choose the specific seats to suit your requirements.
The Play That Goes Wrong
This comedy theatre show is a hit with families and young people alike. It won the Oliver award in 2015 for best new comedy in London, and the Broadway adaptation has been directed by JJ Abrams.
You can watch The Play That Goes Wrong at the New World Stages on Broadway. Tickets can be purchased online, at the box office or via phone.
