As travelling parents, we know first-hand the importance accommodation has in creating both a relaxing and memorable family vacation.

When we began planning our first family vacation to Oahu, Hawaii we found the number of accommodation options to be incredibly overwhelming.

We therefore, decided to use a portion of our time on the island to research the different properties in person to hopefully help other families in their decision on where to stay.

1. Sheraton Waikiki

The Sheraton Waikiki hotel is one of the best family resorts in Oahu. This large luxury resort on world-famous Waikiki Beach makes the perfect base for exploring Oahu.

The beach is just outside your door, while family-friendly attractions like the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium are just a short drive away.

Some rooms offer ocean or city views, and family rooms with two double beds and a twin bed are available.

When it comes to amenities, there’s an oceanfront infinity pool for adults, and the family-friendly Helumoa Playground pool for kids, which includes a 70-foot water slide.

In addition to offering two on-site restaurants, a coffee shop, and a pool bar, the Sheraton Waikiki also has a Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlour which is guaranteed to be a hit for kids, along with a bakery called The Cookie Corner in the lobby.

The hotel also offers Poppins Day Care, a kids club service for children aged three months to twelve years, with arts and crafts, a PlayStation, as well as educational books and games.

2. Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

Being a Disney Resort, kids will love getting to meet their favourite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Daisy Duck, along with Moana and Stitch.

There are many on-site restaurants to choose from, and amenities that adults will love including a full-service spa and wellness centre and an 18-hole golf course. 

3. Hilton Hawaiian Village

Hilton Hawaiian Village is another family-friendly resort on the island of Oahu. Located on the widest stretch of Waikiki Beach, this resort offers a slice of paradise for the whole family to enjoy.

Guests can choose from rooms with resort, coastal or ocean views across five different towers. Being such a large resort, you’ll be able to enjoy dining at 18 different on-site restaurants, cafes, and lounges.

The resort has a private beach and its own private five-acre saltwater lagoon, the only one of its kind on Waikiki Beach.

Your family can enjoy snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and other fun activities in the ocean or lagoon. Alternatively, consider taking a dip in one of the four swimming pools, one of which features a water slide.

You can learn about Hawaiian culture during free daily activities like hula lessons and lei making, and take part in a traditional Hawaiian luau in the evening.

Hilton Hawaiian Village also offers a unique kids club called Camp Penguin that is designed to give kids a true Hawaiian experience with immersive activities and programming.

4. Kahala Hotel

Kahala Hotel is one of the best luxury hotels in Oahu for families. This secluded hotel is the perfect setting for the ultimate Hawaiian family vacation.

The resort offers rooms and suites with oceanfront and island views.

Meanwhile, the main swimming pool is the perfect place to relax and grab a bite to eat from the poolside bar, while the resort’s beach is great for snorkelling, kayaking, or boogie boarding.

Kahala Hotel is home to Dolphin Quest, a popular experience for families that allows you to get up close and personal with dolphins.

Various packages are available that include the opportunity to meet, feed, play with, and swim with the dolphins.

When it comes to dining, Kahala Hotel has five restaurants, cafes, and bars to choose from. Many things at the resort are complimentary, including daily cultural activities, bicycle rentals, and a shuttle service to Waikiki Beach.

The Keikei Club is the resort’s kids club with half-day and full-day programs available for children of all ages.

5. Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort

The Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort is another family-friendly property, located on the white sands and blue waters of Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, close to Diamond Head Crater.

All rooms and suites here have private balconies, many overlooking the ocean. There’s an on-site restaurant and poolside cafe where you can grab lunch after a day relaxing on the beach or by the pool.

In addition to the swimming pool, there’s also a hot tub, fitness centre, and spa. All of Honolulu’s family-friendly attractions like the Honolulu Zoo and the Sea Life Park Hawaii are just a short drive away from the resort.

The resort also offers Camp Hyatt, a kids club with programming for little ones if parents need some time to themselves.

6. Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club

Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club is a great place for families in Oahu who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.

The Marriot Ko Olina Beach Club is located within the same complex as Disney’s Aulani Resort and offers a more generalised family-friendly experience.

Ko Olina Beach Club offers standard guest rooms as well as one- and two-bedroom villas which offer full kitchens, separate living rooms, dining areas, and laundry rooms, which are perfect for families who want some extra space on their vacation.

This resort offers three outdoor swimming pools, including a kid’s pool. The private beach is calm and secluded, perfect for swimming or snorkelling.

There’s also an on-site restaurant, poolside cafe, coffee shop and bakery. For even more recreations, guests will be able to enjoy an 18-hole golf course and a spa.

For young children, the resort offers a kids club with daily scheduled activities. There’s also a traditional Hawaiian luau every week that is fun for the whole family.

7. Four Seasons Resort Oahu

The Four Seasons Resort Oahu is also located on the same property as Disney’s Aulani Resort and Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club, however, it takes things to the next level with five-star luxury and amenities.

This is one of the best luxury resorts in Oahu for families who want to have an unforgettable vacation in the Hawaiian islands. This hotel offers extremely luxurious rooms and suites with oceanfront or garden views.

There are four swimming pools, including an adults-only infinity pool and the kid-friendly Keiki Pool located just steps from the private lagoon with its white sand beaches.

You can try your hand at kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, or other watersports on the lagoon, or hop aboard a catamaran sailboat tour. 

Other activities include golf at the Ko Olina Beach Club, playing a round or two at the resort tennis court, or indulging in a spa treatment.

For families with small children, the Four Seasons offers a complimentary kids club that includes activities like arts and crafts, outdoor sports, and swimming.

8. Royal Hawaiian Hotel

Royal Hawaiian Hotel is a great place to stay on Waikiki Beach if you’re looking for a more boutique five-star hotel experience.

Known as the Pink Palace of the Pacific, this historic hotel stands out among the high-rise mega-resorts along Waikiki Beach. It offers a more boutique feeling, with rooms in both the historic wing and the newer tower.

Guests will enjoy direct beach access and two swimming pools, including the kid-friendly Helumoa Playground which is shared with the Sheraton Waikiki next door.

Guests at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel can also take advantage of Poppins Day Care, the kids club at the Sheraton Waikiki, which offers cultural activities, beach time, and pool activities for little ones.

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel also offers activities for the whole family including lei making, hula lessons, and storytelling.

Dining options include breakfast at the resort’s beachfront restaurant (don’t miss the pink pancakes!) and dinner at a traditional Hawaiian luau.

The hotel’s prime location means that it’s just a short drive from many of Oahu’s top attractions, including family-friendly hikes, waterfalls, the aquarium, the zoo, and more.

9. Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach

Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach is a great family hotel in Oahu located in the heart of all the action on the famous Waikiki Beach. 

This all-suite hotel is perfect for families due to its spacious suites that offer studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom configurations.

All suites include a separate living area and kitchenette, and some have a private balcony with either city views or views of the beach and the Pacific Ocean.

Another reason families love the Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach is that it includes a delicious made-to-order breakfast every morning.

The hotel offers an outdoor pool, hot tub, and kids’ pool on its fourth-floor Grand Lanai. It’s also located just steps away from the beach and some of the top local attractions including Diamond Head Crater and Waikiki Aquarium.

Other amenities at the Embassy Suites include a fitness centre and guest laundry facilities. While there is no dedicated kids club at this property, it’s a very family-friendly hotel with lots of activities for children nearby.

10. Turtle Bay Resort, Kahuku

Turtle Bay Resort, Kahuku is one of the best Oahu resorts on the North Shore for families.

Located about one hour from Honolulu, the North Shore is known for its incredible beaches, snorkelling, and surfing, making it a great spot for your next family vacation.

This resort offers a variety of accommodation options, including standard guest rooms, suites, family villas, and private bungalows.

Turtle Bay Resort boasts 8 kilometres (5 miles) of secluded shoreline and 19.3 kilometres (12 miles) of hiking and biking trails, making this the perfect destination for families who are seeking active adventure on their vacation.

Guests can try exciting activities like horseback riding or surf lessons, or just relax at one of the resort’s three pools or seven beaches.

11. Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort

​​Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort is one of the best hotels for families in Oahu. Located right on Waikiki Beach, this hotel is the perfect base for your family vacation.

There’s an on-site restaurant, the casual Kani Ka Pila Grille, along with a Starbucks where you can fuel up with coffee before a big day of exploring.

This resort also offers an outdoor pool and is located just steps from the beach and many of Waikiki’s top attractions like the Beach Walk shopping centre and Diamond Head Crater are also within easy walking distance.

While there is no dedicated kids club at this hotel, families will enjoy the many complimentary activities included in your stay such as live music every night, lei making, arts and crafts, hula lessons, sunset ceremonies and ukulele lessons.

12. Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel

Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel is one of the best condo-style family resorts in Oahu. If you’re looking for a relaxing, private getaway this is the perfect place to stay.

With only four spacious suites per floor, you’ll have plenty of privacy and room for your family. All suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking oceanfront views.

One-bedroom and two-bedroom suites are available, and all feature private balconies, separate living and dining areas, full kitchens, and a washer and dryer.

The resort is close to some of the best beaches, water activities, shopping, and dining that Oahu has to offer. You’re just a short drive away from popular kids’ activities like the Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo.

Families will also enjoy the hotel’s recreation deck, which includes a swimming pool, hot tub, fitness centre, and billiards. This hotel is perfect for families who want some extra space with their own spacious suite.

The resort also offers complimentary beach toys and gear for kids, and there are daily family-friendly activities like hula lessons, lei-making, and ukulele lessons.

13. Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club

Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club is a boutique hotel in Waikiki Beach that is the perfect place to stay for families who do not want a large resort. Instead, this hotel offers a more intimate boutique experience.

Families with older children will enjoy this hotel because it offers one- to three-bedroom suites with private lanais, separate seating areas, and kitchenettes.

However, one thing to note about this hotel is that unlike other properties listed here, it’s not directly on the beach.

However, it’s just a 10-minute walk to Waikiki Beach and the hotel does have a swimming pool, which becomes adults-only after 6 p.m. There’s also an on-site restaurant serving casual Hawaiian fare.

This is a great base for families who are more interested in exploring Oahu than spending all day on the beach, and the hotel offers complimentary parking for your rental car so you can easily explore all that the island has to offer.

14. Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa is a great hotel on Waikiki Beach. This historic hotel, which originally opened in 1901, is known as the First Lady of Waikiki.

It combines Victorian charm and elegance with all the modern comforts and conveniences you’d expect. Guest rooms offer city or beach views, some with private balconies. You can stay in the historic hotel or the new modern tower.

Guests at the resort will enjoy an outdoor swimming pool, a private beach, a fitness centre, and a spa.

There are several on-site dining options, including a beach bar and poolside cafe, along with more upscale options. Afternoon tea at The Veranda is one of the most popular traditions at this hotel.

The resort’s ideal location on Waikiki Beach makes it the perfect place to try out all the nearby activities, including catamaran sailing tours, canoe rides, and surfing lessons.

You can also go snorkelling or swimming at the resort’s beautiful private beach. Many family-friendly activities like the zoo and the aquarium are just a short distance away, along with plenty of restaurants and other activities.

15. Halekulani Hotel

​Halekulani Hotel is one of the best places to stay on Waikiki Beach if you are looking for a luxurious and memorable experience. This hotel offers several guest rooms and suites, many with private balconies overlooking the ocean.

There’s a swimming pool overlooking Waikiki Beach, along with a spa and fitness centre.

Guests can enjoy a complimentary surf or paddle boarding demo every morning and book further lessons if they want to improve their skills.

When it comes to dining, Halekulani Hotel offers four on-site restaurants to choose from, including House Without A Key, which is one of the most famous nightly luau restaurants on Waikiki Beach.

Picky eaters will be fine because there’s a special “keiki” (kids) menu with kid-friendly options. While there is no kids club at this hotel, childcare is available.

The location of Halekulani Hotel is also close to activities like the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium that kids of all ages will enjoy.

16. Alohilani Resort

Alohilani Resort is one more great hotel for families in Oahu. Located on Waikiki Beach, this resort offers amenities and activities for the whole family.

Guests can choose between standard rooms or spacious suites, many with oceanfront views.

There’s also several on-site dining options, including a casual buffet restaurant, a coffee shop, and a Häagen-Dazs ice cream parlour that is sure to be a hit with kids.

The hotel also has a swimming pool and sun deck with views over the ocean, and Waikiki Beach is just steps away. You can rent surfboards, paddle boards, and other beach gear from the hotel’s surf shop.

One of the coolest features of the Alohilani Resort is the Oceanarium, which is located in the hotel lobby. Here guests can enjoy watching daily fish feeding by the hotel’s team of aquarists.

Other exciting family-friendly activities, like hula dancing lessons, lei making, and Hawaiian story time are included in your stay at Alohilani Resort.
