When heading out on safari there’s a number of things you’ll need to buy which may be different or in addition to what you’d usually have for a more traditional vacation.
Given the location of safari’s one of the first things we looked to upgrade was our water bottle. The water bottle market has got significantly more competitive over the last decade, however, during that time we’ve stuck to the same make and model – until now.
We needed an upgrade, more specifically a water bottle with a filter (something our water bottle didn’t have nor could have as an attachment).
We spent some time thoroughly researching all the best water bottles for a safari to find the very best makes and models. We know that one isn’t always right for everyone so there’s plenty of options here, all of which should be available wherever you’re located (US, UK, Australia, Canada etc.)
All of these options should be available on Amazon, however, they may also be available in local camping or leisure stores – if you really struggle, major airports usually have a wide variety of water bottles available too so you might be able to find one there.
The Yeti Rambler comes in 12oz, 18oz, 26oz and 38oz which makes it a great option for those looking for a specific size or capacity.
The water bottle is double insulated which helps to maintain the temperature of the liquid (hot or cold) for a significant amount of time (we found that in the vast majority of cases our cold drinks were still cold even 24 hours later!).
Being made from stainless steel you’ll also find that there’s no nasty metal taste, and of course, the bottle is BPA free.
The Yeti Rambler is incredibly tough and designed to last, each of the sizes comes in four different colours; Seafoam, Tahoe Blue, Black, and Olive Green.
As the Rambler is the leading line of the Yeti brand, there are additional accessories that can be purchased to use alongside the water bottle. My personal favourite is the bottle cup cap which is perfect for a morning coffee.
EcoVessel Boulder Insulated Water Bottle
EcoVessel is another mainstream water bottle brand that offers a range of bottles suitable for safari. Our personal favourite is the Boulder water bottle which is made from premium 18/8 stainless steel and TriMax® triple insulation which is designed to keeps drinks cold for up to 74 hours and hot up to 14 hours.
The bottle comes in four different sizes and a range of colours and styles to suit all needs and personalities.
However, if all that wasn’t enough, being the leading line for the brand the Boulder water bottle also has a range of compatible accessories.
These accessories include; a duel top lid, a strainer, a tea infuser as well as a one-hand push coffee lid.
The EcoVessel Boulder water bottle can be purchased online and in-store at most major retailers worldwide as well as from Amazon. The bottle comes with a 100-year guarantee, the brand believes it’s the last bottle you should ever need to buy (although we’ve not tested on that personally).
Bindle is an old term used for a blanket stick, something today we often only see on films. However, it’s an apt term for this incredibly simple yet useful water bottle design.
Being a relatively new company, Bindle Bottle currently only offers one design in two sizes, a Bindle Slim which has a 20 fl oz capacity, and the Bindle Bottle which has a standard 24 fl oz capacity.
Both bottles offer a range of colours, however, there’s a limited range of accessories – just a coffee cup lid and a lid with a reusable store.
The bottle has a relatively standard design, it’s BPA free and keeps drinks hot or cold for hours.
However, the real selling point is the storage area located at the bottom of the drinks bottle. It’s small enough so that it doesn’t add to the weight and minimises the increased dimensions of the water bottle.
This added feature isn’t going to be right for everyone, however, for those who are looking for a slightly more ‘hands-free’ experience this water bottle is a fantastic contender.
The Katadyn BeFree is one of the most expensive water bottles on this list, however, it’s well worth it, especially when you’re going on safari. That’s because this water bottle is more than just a water bottle, it’s also a filtering system.
The top lid area of the bottle has a filter which filters the water prior to you drinking it. This is ideal when visiting places where you’re unsure as to whether the water is safe to drink as it makes all water safe to drink.
There are some other brands that also offer this filtering water bottle system (more on those below).
However, some of the advantages of the Katadyn BeFree over other filtration water bottles is that it has a collapsable design (however, this also has it’s drawbacks in durability as these water bottles, therefore, tend to get a hole in much quicker compared to those made from stainless steel or aluminium) and treats the water immediately (others can take around one minute).
Lifestraw Go is one of the most prolific water bottles and comes with a built-in filter which allows you to filter water on the go which in my opinion vastly improves the taste and of course, protects against bacteria etc.
The water bottle comes in two sizes; 22 oz and a 1 litre. Being that LifeStraw is an incredibly popular water bottle brand and this bottle specifically is one of their leading product lines it’s available in over 20 different colours and styles.
There is of course, good reason as to why the LifeStraw brand is so popular in such a competitive market and that comes down to the quality of the product.
LifeStraw bottle filters can last up to 4,000L before they need replacing. These filters protect against 99.999999% of bacteria including E.coli and Salmonella as well as parasites such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
Designed to last, the LifeStraw water bottles are durable and of course, BPA free. You can purchase replacement parts such as filters, and accessories such as clips and mouthpieces online for a relatively affordable price.
The water bottle itself can be purchased for major retailers online, or in-store around the world. We personally picked ours up on Amazon.
Grayl Ultralight Water Purifier
Grayl offers a range of different water purifying water bottles, however, our personal favourite is the Ultralight model which is perfect for taking on a safari.
The Grayl Ultralight water purifying bottle is one of the most expensive water bottles on this list, however, we feel the price is justified given the quality of the product.
The bottle comes in one standard 16 fl oz size, and a small range of colours (3 at the time of writing).
The purifying one-press process is award-winning and allows you to filter any and all water sources (taps, streams, rivers, lakes, sea water etc.)
The purifying filter is safe for up to 300 cycles (the equivalent of 40 gallons), and can be replaced easily with a new filter cartridge which can be purchased online.
Much like the LifeStraw mentioned above, this water bottle is designed to filter 99.99% of viruses, 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoan cysts including Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Giardiasis, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Cholera and Salmonella.
There’s a number of replacement parts, such as the filter alongside accessories which can be purchased for the Grayl Ultralight bottle online.
Hydrapak Stash Water Bottle
The Hydrapak Stash water bottle simply had to be included in this list of the best water bottles for safari due to its incredible flexibility and durability. It’s one of the more affordable water bottles on this list, however, this doesn’t seem to impact on the lifespan and quality of the product (provided you take good care of it of course).
Hydrapak is known for producing a range of water bottles, filtering systems and related products. One of these products is, of course, the Stash water bottle which since launch has consistently been one of the best selling lines for the company.
It comes in just one size 1L, and once collapsed and compressed it can be reduced in size by 75%.
This makes it perfect for those looking to travel light, without compromising on a water bottle.
The bottle comes in four different, and highly distinctive colours and can be used with or without a filter depending on where you’re travelling. Filters alongside other accessories can be purchased from major retailers and online a the Hydrapak website.
The bottle is made from an ultra-durable, abrasion resistant TPU with RD welded seams which gives it the durability and elasticity to compress down. It’s also free from BPA and PVC.
