Are Harry Potter Robes Worth Buying At Universal Studios?

If you or someone you’re travelling to Universal Studios with is a fan of Harry Potter then you’ve likely looked at purchasing a Hogwarts robe during your visit.

Harry Potter (Hogwarts) robes can be purchased in stores across Universal Studios including Madam Malkin’s Robes inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Robes come in all 4 houses (Griffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff), are available in both adult & kids sizes and cost $139 plus tax.

Given the $139 plus tax price point, many (myself included) are often left wondering whether this is a worthwhile investment during a trip to the parks.

How Much Do Robes Cost At Universal Studios?

During my last visit to Universal Studios (September 2022) the cost of a Harry Potter (Hogwarts) robe was $139 plus tax.

This $139 plus tax price point is fixed regardless of size (adult robe or child robe) and the house you choose (Griffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff).

Can Hogwarts Robes Be Custom Embroided?

Universal Studios offers custom embroidery on a range of products that can be purchased inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter including the Hogwarts robes.

Hogwarts robe embroidery costs $20 plus tax while the embroidery of other applicable items inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is usually $10 plus tax.

Embroidery for Hogwarts robes can only be purchased at Madam Malkin’s Robes For All Occasions (inside Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida and inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood).

Do Hogwarts Robes Come With A Wand Pocket?

All Hogwarts robes purchased from Universal Studios come with a wand pocket suitable for most wand sizes (including wands purchased at the park).

The wand pocket is on the right-hand side of the robe and is the perfect place to store your wand until you need it.

On the outside of the robe, there are two pockets, one on either side both of which are incredibly deep and ideal for storing drinks, snacks & frogs.

Are The Hogwarts Robes From Universal Studios Worth It?

With all that, are the Hogwarts robes from Universal Studios worth purchasing?

In our opinion, it comes down to your overall souvenir budget and how much of a fan you are of the Harry Potter franchise.

  • Is this something you’re likely to wear both inside and outside of the Universal Studios parks?
  • Do you plan to come to the parks again in the future?
  • Would you wear the robe on your next visit to the parks if that’s the case?

If that’s the case then yes, a Hogwarts robe from Universal Studios very well may be a worthwhile investment.

One thing to keep in mind is that given the heat during certain times of the year, wearing a Hogwarts robe may be uncomfortable.

As such while Helen enjoyed having her photo taken in the robe and wandering around both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley dressed up it was only something that could be done for a short period of time or early in the morning before the heat of the summer sun.

Certainly, when compared to other similar robes you can purchase from stores such as Walmart, Target or Amazon the quality and attention to detail of the official robe from Universal Studios stands above and beyond.

Can You Wear Harry Potter Robes At Universal Studios?

You are able to wear Harry Potter (Hogwarts) robes at Universal Studios and will not be alone in doing so.

There will be a large number of people (both adults and children) wearing Hogwarts robes inside of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter during your visit so you certainly won’t be the only person dressing up.

That being said, given the temperatures during the summer and at the risk of not damaging the robe most choose to store the robe or pack it away while exploring the rest of the park.

As such you may want to consider bringing a backpack large enough to carry the Hogwarts robe while you’re not wearing it, or bring some additional money for a locker rental.

Can You Bring Your Own Robe To Wear At Universal Studios?

You can also bring your own Harry Potter robe to wear at Universal Studios.

This is a particularly great option for younger children who want to dress up but who might not appreciate the value of an official robe from the parks.

The Best Place To Buy A Harry Potter Robe At Universal Studios

If you decide that you’d like to invest in an official Hogwarts robe then consider making the buying experience part of the purchase.

Harry Potter (Hogwarts) robes are sold in multiple places across the Universal Studios Resort;

  • Stores at on-site properties (Orlando only)
  • Universal Studios store at CityWalk
  • Universal Studios store at the entrance to the park
  • Madam Malkin’s inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Diagon Alley in Orlando)

However, in our opinion, the best place to buy a robe is at Madam Malkin’s Robes For All Occasions inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

This store is the most popular place to purchase a Harry Potter robe being that it’s a direct reflection of the Hogwarts robe purchasing experience within the Harry Potter franchise.

Given that this store is dedicated to robes you’ll find all four houses available in both adult and child sizes.

However, along with this, you’ll also find a range of accessories available in all four house colours. These accessories include headbands, bows and ties.

Madam Malkin’s Robes For All Occasions is also the only place within Universal Studios where you can have your robe custom embroidered with your name for an additional fee.

How To Clean A Harry Potter (Hogwarts) Robe

For various reasons you may find that your Hogwarts robe needs cleaning either after a trip to Universal Studios or after wearing your robe at home.

While the process for cleaning third-party robes may vary, the official Hogwarts robes purchased from Universal Studios are dry clean only (as stated on the label inside of the robe).

    1. The robes will come with a care label for washing and ironing. If not use low heat, no steam and use a cloth over the top and try the iron on the hem of the robe before moving to the main areas. I hope this helps.
