Seeing Kinky Boots The Musical In London With BuyAGift

Even though I was a historical and performance costume student I hadn’t had much opportunity to go see many shows. Mostly because all the best ones are in New York or London. But over the years now I have managed to see a few and this time was just as amazing.

I’ll admit I am a bit of a show nerd, with my costume background I can easily end up staring at the costumes and working out how they were made. I even look at how quick changes were done. I also love musicals, I don’t think I realised this until recently and it is because I like to sing.. I’m not good at it though. So you can imagine my excitement when BuyAGift wanted to send us to go see a show in London.

Although the range of shows varies all the time depending on what’s currently showing and availability.

Collecting Tickets

This was the exciting part as we were there and we had been waiting all day to see the show. We had no trouble getting to a ticket desk and were seen to straight away. All we needed was the name in which the tickets were booked under – “Cora” and there we have it. We got our tickets and went to find our seats, though the seats were located in the upper circle which means your practically halfway to heaven, you still get an awesome view.

The Adelphi Theatre

The Adelphi Theatre is a short walk from Charing Cross Tube Station and Trafalgar Square and currently, the home of the Kinky Boots London show!

Located in an area full of places to eat and go a for a drink before and after the show. You can’t miss the amazing sign outside and of course the glamorous lights of a West End theatre. Once inside there were the famous boots stood proudly in a glass case on display. The best part was a popup cardboard cut out of the boots in which you could stand and have your picture taken. I am sad to say that many of the men pulled the boots of better than me.

The current building standing on the Strand as we know it as the Adelphi building was actually the fourth to be built there. The theatre itself had a number of names that finally led it to what we know it as now. Some of these names included The Royal Adelphi, Theatre Royal Adelphi and Theatre Royal New Adelphi. The building was constructed and opened in 1930 with the name The Royal Adelphi, though in 1940 the ‘Royal’ epithet was dropped.

The first theatre was built by a man called John Scott who was a local businessman who wanted to build the theatre for his daughter. Mainly to show off her talents on stage and also for her to become the theatre manager.

The theatre over the many years unveiled many different shows, had many different managers and had, even more, updates and work done. Finally having the last of the work done in 2014 with a new arrangement for more lavatory facilities and a new bar in the foyer.

The Show

I had never seen the film or even knew what the show was about…except for the boots of course. But otherwise, I was going into the show with no other knowledge. Later finding out that the film itself was based on a true story. I always worry that I should know some of the songs or even the basic story of the show. Cora had seen the film many years ago so she thought this was a good choice.

The story is based in Northampton at a traditional shoe factory that has been within the family for decades. The father, unfortunately, passes away and reluctant son Charlie takes over. Planning on shutting down the factory Charlie meets an unlikely source of inspiration in the form of sassy and flamboyant drag queen Lola.

From there we follow the transformation of the factory from a traditional shoe to the wonderful 2 feet and 6 inches from the ground glorious Kinky Boots London. Singing and dancing along the way there could be no better way to spend the evening.

Once the first act was done I loved it, I was secretly trying to work out if I could sing to any of the songs but not yet… I will have to go home and practice. Everything was amazing, it was bright, fun and funny. The cast is great and I really love the sass of the Drag Queens. They were simply fantastic and pulled off amazing outfits and even more amazing dance moves. Even sitting near the very top of the theatre you could see everything and definitely hear everything with perfect pitch. I couldn’t fault the light humour, wonderful songs and brilliant dancing.

There was a 15-minute interval where you could go for a toilet break. Sneak off for ice cream or get yourself to the bar. There was always an opportunity to buy a programme and even had small glittery red Kinky Boots Christmas tree decorations on sale.  While the seating is still the traditional seating from when the theatres opened and are fair to say isn’t the most spacious or comfortable, when the show starts you forget where you are. You wouldn’t think that the ladies of the Victorian era would sit in their big dresses in the small seats.

After the interval, we got settled back into our seats. By this point, I am fully invested in the Kinky Boots story; the factories success along with Charlie and Lola’s life. We laughed some more and even managed to catch on to some of the songs to sing along to. Once the show was over we headed out and still (trying) to sing the last son. Among the crowd of people discussing the show and their favourite character and headed home.
