Are you looking to stay in one of the many great hotels near the Vatican?
Sadly there are no hotels inside the perimeter of the Vatican so you do have to stay on the outskirts within Rome. That said, there’s still plenty of places to stay near the Vatican, suitable for various different group sizes, budgets and desires.
Regardless of where you decide to stay in Rome, public transport connects the majority of the neighbourhoods, making it incredibly easy to explore not just the Vatican but other major sights and landmarks of Rome. In this post we’ve broken down the best hotels near The Vatican based on major requirements; families and groups, luxury, couples and budget hostel stays. Providing you with a range of choices for each of the requirements so hopefully, you’ll be able to find the right accommodation for your trip.
Rome City Tax
The authorities of Rome apply a city tax on all accommodation. This city tax is charged and collected by your hotel and is often in addition to the standard rate of the accommodation. Most accommodation booking websites will state whether or not the city tax has been included in the price quoted.
The amount of city tax you pay depends on the star rating of the hotel in which you stay at and is based on a price per person, per night rather than per room.
0 – 3 Star hotels, hostels, guest houses and Airbnb’s are €4 per person, per night
4 Star hotels are €6 per person, per night
5 Star hotels are €7 per person, per night
The Best Hotels Near The Vatican
For A Family / Party (4 – 12 People)
If you’re travelling as a family or a large party, then it’s often hard to find a space to accommodate you all without having to split off into multiple hotel rooms. The benefits of finding a hotel room or an apartment that can hold four or more people include collaborative living areas, enabling you to relax together in a living room set up.
Not to mention the fact a lot of these accommodation styles will come with a kitchen area allowing you to cook meals and dine together, ideal for those looking to save money or have some flexibility during your stay in Rome.
Our first hotel recommendation near the Vatican for families or a large party is Sunrise In Rome Holidays. The entire apartment is just short of 1,000 square metres and can hold up to six guests. The apartment is made up of two bedrooms and one bathroom alongside a fully serviced kitchen and is just a 10-minute walk from The Vatican. Depending on the time of year, two nights here cost as little as €360.
If Sunrise In is booked up, or if you’re looking for something slightly different then consider booking The Penthouse Suite, Rome. The suite sleeps up to 12 guests in total over four bedrooms which are made up of large double beds and sofa beds.
This apartment once again comes with a wonderful kitchen, and a bathroom full of complimentary amenities. The location of the apartment is ideal, not just for The Vatican but for seeing all of Rome, just 100m outside the door is the Barberini metro station, and within a 5-minute walk, you’ll reach the Trevi Fountain.
Our final recommendation for places to stay near The Vatican for families is Micol’s Place which is a two-bedroom apartment suitable for up to six people. We love the open plan kitchen, dining and living area alongside the modern and simplistic style.
The apartment is very affordable (around €170 a night) however, the proximity to The Vatican means you’ll likely want to hire a taxi to travel the 8.7km distance.

Hotel Barocco is situated just off the main square where you’ll find Bernini’s Triton Fountain. Just over the road is Barbedini Metro station which easily connects you to the various neighbourhoods of Rome.

If you’re planning on visiting Rome on a budget, as a solo traveller or while backpacking then a hostel is a great choice. During one of our first-ever visits to Rome, we stayed in the Yellow Hostel. What’s particularly great about this hostel is the atmosphere, the community vibe you get from the set up of the hostel, which allows you to easily meet other guests of the hostel.
Another great hostel choice in Rome is The RomeHello. The hostel offers a range of dorm-style and private rooms with shared and private bathrooms. The prices are fantastic (around €17 per person, per night for a dorm) and you can get breakfast on-site for a small additional fee.
The hostel is just a 3-minute walk of Repubblica Metro Stop and 0.6 miles from the Trevi Fountain. You can access The Vatican easily via bus which will take around 40 minutes one-way, on foot which would be around an hour walk or via car/taxi which would take around 15 minutes.
Finally, you’ve got Free Hostels Roma. Again, you have a choice of either a bed in a dorm room or a private room. Ideal if you’re looking for the socialisation of a hostel but not looking to share your private space. Although the pricing of this hostel tends to be slightly higher than the previous two hostels we’ve mentioned at around €30 for one night in a dorm room.
In terms of location, Free Hostel Roma is a good choice. The nearest metro stop is just a 2-minute walk from the entrance of the hostel at Principe Eugenio/Manzoni. Although it’s almost 6km over to the Vatican, so you’d most likely want to use a car or hire a taxi where the journey will likely take 20 minutes one way (or around one hour on public transport or walking).

Our next choice is the Palazzo Dama which isn’t just a great choice for a hotel for couples in Rome. It’s also one of the only hotels in Rome to have an outdoor swimming pool. This five-star hotel offers complimentary continental breakfast to all guests, and each room comes with an array of incredible amenities.
In terms of location, the hotel is situated in the Spagna neighbourhood. Ideal for those looking to stay in central Rome, the area is filled with shops from popular brands such as Rolex, H&M, Zara, Nike, Tiffany & Co.
Our final hotel choice for couples is the incredible Hive Hotel, it’s one of the more affordable hotels in Rome suited for couples with a modern and stylish look. It benefits from an incredible location, in fact, it’s just 350 yards from Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica.
