How Long Is the Flight to Hawaii? (2026 Guide for US Cities)

The flight to Hawaii takes between 5 hours 35 minutes and 11 hours direct, depending on which US city you fly from. Cities with no nonstop service run 13 to 15 hours door to door.

The table covers westbound flights to Honolulu from 16 major US cities. Fares are based on 2026 economy return prices, before checked-bag fees.

West Coast Departures

The four shortest routes to Hawaii all leave from the West Coast, and there is barely half an hour between them. Every one of these cities has multiple carriers competing, which is why the fares are the lowest in the country.

San Francisco

🕒 Flight time: 5 hours 35 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $391 to $525 in 2026.

San Francisco is the shortest scheduled flight to Honolulu from anywhere on the mainland. Alaska runs the ex-Hawaiian widebody on this route, which is the more comfortable aircraft of the two.

Los Angeles

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on Alaska, American, Delta, United and Southwest.
🕒 Flight time: 5 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours 55 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $349 to $539 in 2026.

Five airlines fly LAX to Honolulu, which makes it the cheapest route to Hawaii in the country and the easiest one to find award seats on. Fares dip below $350 in January and February.

If you are connecting from elsewhere, LAX is also the most common hub for onward Hawaii flights, so it is worth knowing how much time to leave yourself at LAX before the transpacific leg.

San Diego

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on Alaska and Southwest.
🕒 Flight time: 6 hours to 6 hours 10 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $403 to $611 in 2026.

San Diego adds about half an hour over San Francisco for a fare that is usually a little higher. Only two carriers serve it, so the January sale fares are less reliable here than at LAX.

Seattle

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on Alaska and Delta.
🕒 Flight time: 6 hours 8 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $420 to $684 in 2026.

Seattle sits further north than people expect, so the flight is only half an hour longer than San Francisco despite the extra distance up the coast. Alaska bases a large part of its Hawaii operation here.

Mountain and Southwest Departures

Phoenix and Denver are the last two cities where a nonstop still feels like a normal flight rather than a long-haul. Both cross into the seven-hour bracket once you add taxi time.

Phoenix

🕒 Flight time: 6 hours 25 minutes to 6 hours 45 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $464 to $689 in 2026.

Southwest’s own website still quotes six hours flat for this route. The filed schedules say 6 hours 25 minutes, so plan around the longer figure.

Denver

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on United only.
🕒 Flight time: 7 hours 13 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $454 to $809 in 2026.

United is the only airline flying Denver to Honolulu nonstop. That monopoly shows up in the fare spread, which is the widest of any nonstop city on this list.

Texas and Midwest Departures

These three routes are all single-carrier monopolies, and all three are genuine long-haul flights. Expect a meal service and a proper night’s sleep deficit on arrival.

Dallas

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on American only.
🕒 Flight time: 8 hours 5 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $522 to $913 in 2026.

American runs the Dallas route twice daily on a 787, roughly 12 times a week. The return leg is 42 minutes quicker at 7 hours 23 minutes.

Houston

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on United only.
🕒 Flight time: 8 hours 16 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $647 to $1,068 in 2026.

Houston does have a daily nonstop to Honolulu on United, flown by a 777. Plenty of older guides still say it does not, which sends people connecting through Dallas for no reason.

Unfortunately the fares are among the highest in the country, because United has no competition on the route and Houston sits a long way from the cheap West Coast inventory.

Chicago

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on United. American returns 25 October 2026.
🕒 Flight time: 9 hours 2 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $604 to $986 in 2026.

United flies O’Hare to Honolulu daily on a 787-10. American adds a winter seasonal nonstop from 25 October 2026, which should pull the December fares down from their current $900-plus peak.

East Coast Departures

These are the longest domestic flights operating in the United States. New York to Honolulu is close to eleven hours, which is longer than New York to most of Europe.

New York City

✈️ Nonstop: Yes from JFK, on Alaska and Delta.
🕒 Flight time: 10 hours 55 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $676 to $970 in 2026.

The nonstop runs from JFK only. Alaska flies it on the ex-Hawaiian A330, Delta on a 767, and between them there are around ten departures a week.

Newark has no nonstop through the summer. United’s seasonal service resumes on 20 November 2026, so before that date a Newark departure means connecting through Houston or San Francisco and losing about three hours.

Eleven hours in a departures hall goes badly if you arrive too early, so it is worth checking how early to get to JFK for a flight this long.

Boston

✈️ Nonstop: None until Delta relaunches on 19 December 2026.
🕒 Flight time: 13 hours 30 minutes to 15 hours connecting.
💰 Typical return: $632 to $974 in 2026.

Boston lost both of its Hawaii nonstops in November 2025. Hawaiian dropped the route on 19 November and Delta followed a day later, which leaves the city with no direct service for most of 2026.

Delta brings it back on 19 December 2026 with an A330-300, daily over the peak and four times a week through the rest of the winter. Expect a nonstop time of around 11 hours 40 minutes.

Until then you are connecting through Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas or Chicago, and a realistic total is 13 and a half to 15 hours. Add the time you need at Logan on top of that.

Atlanta

✈️ Nonstop: Yes, on Delta only.
🕒 Flight time: 9 hours 35 minutes.
💰 Typical return: $769 to $1,318 in 2026.

Delta flies Atlanta to Honolulu about five times a week on an A330, and adds a second rotation three times a week from 4 January 2027. Atlanta is the most expensive city on this list, and the nonstop premium is why.

Connecting through Houston or Phoenix can cut the fare by more than half, at the cost of two to four extra hours. On a trip this long that trade is worth running the numbers on.

Cities With No Nonstop to Hawaii

Four of the cities people ask about most have never had a scheduled nonstop to Hawaii. From all of them you are connecting on the West Coast or in Texas, and the realistic total is 13 to 15 hours.

• Orlando: connect via Los Angeles, Dallas or Phoenix. Around 13 to 15 hours, typically $596 to $833 return in 2026.
• Miami: connect via Los Angeles, Dallas or Atlanta. Around 13 and a half to 16 hours, typically $535 to $704 return.
• Indianapolis: connect via Los Angeles, Dallas or Minneapolis. Around 13 to 15 hours, typically $574 to $831 return.
• Nashville: connect via Las Vegas, San Diego or Los Angeles. Around 12 and a half to 15 hours, typically $620 to $866 return.

Miami looks oddly cheap next to Atlanta on that list. The reason is that Miami has no nonstop to price against, so it sells off cheap connecting inventory while Atlanta charges a nonstop premium.
