How To Find The Best And Most Affordable Flights To Hawaii

Given how far Hawaii is from the US Mainland, ticket prices for flights to the islands can be expensive. Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can reduce this cost.

We’ve gone ahead and listed our favourite tips and tricks below. While a combination of these will work best, even just using one could save you upwards of 20% or 30% on your flights which will go a

Compare Airlines

To find the cheapest price for your trip, compare across the airlines. To do this we recommend using a third-party comparison website such as Skyscanner.

Be Flexible With Your Travel Dates

Sometimes we have to travel during those peak-travel periods when the prices are higher.

However, if you can try to be as flexible as possible. Travelling in January is going to be cheaper than March and April (Spring Break).

However, just adjusting from a Friday, Saturday or Sunday flight to a flight on a Wednesday could save you a couple of hundred bucks.

Consider In-Direct Flights

An in-direct flight may add a couple of hours to your journey when compared to non-stop flights. However, it can also save you a couple of hundred dollars.

This could be something as simple as flying to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on the island of Oahu and then taking an onward interisland flight to Kahului Airport in Maui rather than flying direct.

Alternatively, it could mean transferring in the likes of LAX or San Francisco if you’re coming from the midwest or east coast.

Again, we recommend using Skyscanner to find the most economical route (both in trip duration and money) from your nearest airport.

Consider An Alternative Airport

Alternatively, consider driving a little further from home and travelling from an alternative departure city to Hawaii.

Something as simple as driving from Los Angeles to San Fransisco for a flight to Hawaii could save you upwards of $200 per person during the peak season – which if you’re a family could quickly add up to savings of more than $1,000.

Of course, you’ll want to make sure that the savings are economical given the additional gas costs and inconvenience.

Use Airline Credit Cards, Points & Miles

One way to get the best deal on your flights to Hawaii is to use an airline credit card which will allow you to ammas either points or miles which can be used in exchange for either free or discounted flights or on upgrades to premium economy and first class.

The world of airline credit cards is a complex one, so to learn more I’d highly recommend checking out The Points Guy.
