A Guide To The Flyaway Bus From LAX To Union Station (and vise-versa)

If you’re visiting LA for pleasure, then one of the easiest ways to get from the airport to your accommodation is via the Flyaway Bus.

There are multiple Flyaway Bus journeys that operate to and from LAX to different parts of LA, however today we’re going to be focusing on the Flyaway Bus from LAX to Union Station (or Union Station back to LAX).

We’re focusing on the Flyaway Bus from LAX to Union Station not only because it’s the journey we took, but because it’s the most popular journey that Flyaway bus offers. With many travelling onwards via the metro from Union Station to their final destination.

Where To Catch The Flyaway Bus At LAX

Let’s start with where you’re going to catch the bus when you arrive at LAX. Firstly, proceed through security and customs. Then you’ll need to exit the airport and go to the nearest bus stop with the FlyAway information.

Catching The Bus From Terminal 7

We flew into Terminal 7 at LAX. Here’s our more detailed description of how to find the FlyAway bus at this particular terminal. 

This photo is taken from exactly where you need to stand to catch the Flyaway Bus. This is for all Flyaway buses not just the bus to Union Station. Outside Terminal 7 doors L1-16 and L1-15. Cross the crosswalk in front and you’ll likely see other people waiting as well as the green sign for departure destinations on a pillar to your left.

As all the Flyaway buses from LAX depart from this location you’ll need to ensure you get on the correct bus to Union Station. You can do so by checking the curbside sign or the sign on the front of the bus for its destination details.

If you’re unsure you can always check with the driver who will be more than happy to assist you where they can.

Just inside of the doors L15 you’ll find an information desk. This desk is manned by volunteers of the airport who will be able to assist you with information as to the airport and the flyaway schedule/location if you are unsure.

Where To Catch The Flyaway Bus At Union Station

The Flyaway bus from Union Station to LAX leaves from bus stop 9 at the Patsaouras Transit Plaza. Exit towards Vignes Street and take a right.

You’ll find the ticket booth for the Flyaway Bus located on the curve around bay 4. Here you can ask for up to date information and purchase your ticket for the journey. However, the bus won’t leave from here it’ll leave from bay 9.

How Long Does The Flyaway Bus From LAX To Union Station Take?

The journey between LAX and Union Station can take anything from 45 minutes to one hour depending on the traffic. Weekdays between 7am – 10am and 4pm and 7pm can be extremely busy.

You can check the traffic ahead of time on your GPS on your smartphone to see the traffic before and during your journey. The map above should also adjust the traffic and journey time in real-time (NST timezone) 

The Cost Of A Flyaway Bus Journey From LAX To Union Station

The cost of a one-way journey for one person between LAX and Union Station on the Flyaway Bus is $9.75. Children under the age of 5 are free (maximum of two free children for each paying adult)

How To Pay For Your Flyaway Bus Journey

You can pay for your journey whether you’re going from LAX to Union Station or Union Station to LAX at Union Station. Alternatively, you can purchase your ticket prior to your journey online.

The bus driver does not take payments. 

Union Station to LAX – As you board the bus at Union Station you’ll be asked to show your ticket.

LAX to Union Station – Simply board the bus and show your ticket at the end of your journey to reclaim your luggage from the hold. If you don’t have a ticket proceed to the ticket booth at Union Station to purchase a ticket before going back to the driver to show your ticket and claim your luggage.

No seats or time-slots are eligible for reservation with an online ticket purchase. It’s always first come, first served. 

Things To Do At Union Station

You might find yourself a little early for your Flyaway bus back to LAX or even your connecting journey from Union Station to your final destination during your trip.

In that case, be sure to check out some of the things to see, do and note while at Union Station. The architecture and history of this building is amazing and is very much worth admiring.

  1. do you know if you take the FLyway bus to Union if you can get off earlier? Ive been trying to find the route to see if it goes past our hotel. Any advice?

    1. Hi, I’m sorry I don’t think Flyaway provide you with any real-time info on the buses. You could try asking inside the terminal they may know more.

        As far as I could tell, it was exactly as you guys laid out. They pick up at lots of stops. whichever terminal you pop out, boom , there’s a stop.

        I will mention that the public transport metro line is currently under construction, and should be connected to airport around 2020. another option to get from airport to spots around the metropolis!
