8 Best Things to Do in Jacksonville, Florida
This blog post features links and information which have been obtained on a press trip. However, as always, all opinions shared in this post are my own.
Perhaps best known for its sprawling beaches and lively arts scene, Jacksonville is the perfect spot for a long weekend break. Which is exactly how I experienced the city this past summer.
With such a diverse range of attractions, there’s something for everyone in Jacksonville. Here are my top picks:
1. Take a Walk Through Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
The Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is just 10 minutes from downtown. This 120-acre urban woodland was established in 2004 and is primarily maintained by volunteers.
Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens benefits from:
- More than three miles of hiking trails
- 13 distinct ecosystems
- Diverse wildlife, including snakes, alligators and lizards
This makes the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens a great place to enjoy nature in the city.
2. Explore Jacksonville’s Murals
Jacksonville, Florida, boasts a vibrant public art scene. Murals are prominently featured across the city, reflecting the neighbourhood’s unique character.
This fantastic interactive map makes going on a self-guided mural tour or finding nearby murals quick and easy.
3. Enjoy Mayport Shrimp at Safe Harbor Seafood
Mayport shrimp is a culinary hallmark of Jacksonville, Florida. These wild-caught Atlantic shrimp are harvested at the end of St. Johns River as it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Numerous Jacksonville restaurants feature Mayport shrimp, many of which can be found on the Mayport Shrimp Trail. However, my favourite spot for Mayport Shrimp in Jacksonville is Safe Harbor. The food here is very casually served, authentic, and delicious.
4. Cheer on the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium
Jacksonville is home to the NFL team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. Each year, the team plays eight regular-season games at home at EverBank Stadium.
NFL games at the EverBank Stadium are known for their lively atmosphere, drawing thousands of passionate supporters. Meanwhile, beyond football, the adjoining Daily’s Place is a hub for various concerts and other live events.
5. Sip Cocktails at Mayport Garden Club
If you’re looking for a fantastic cocktail experience in Jacksonville, look no further than the Mayport Garden Club.
This speakeasy tropical lounge is open from Thursday to Saturday. Boasting an array of unique yet delicious cocktails, it’s one of my favourite spots in the city. Reservations are required.
6. Tour the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is the largest fine arts museum in Northeast Florida. The museum covers 1.5 acres along the St. Johns River and includes over 5,000 words from 2100 BCE to the 21st century.
Throughout the year, The Cummer Museum hosts various programmes and events. Including classes, talks and tours. Offering opportunities for all ages and experience levels.
7. Explore Downtown with Go Tuk’n Tours
If you want to explore downtown Jacksonville, I highly recommend Tuk’n Tours. Each tour features a knowledgeable guide sharing insights into Jacksonville, past and present.
During the three-hour tour, you’ll pass by significant Jacksonville landmarks and memorials, including the city’s oldest living entity, the Treaty Oak.
8. Enjoy BBQ at The Bearded Pig
The Bearded Pig is a renowned Southern-style BBQ and craft beer spot with two Jacksonville locations to choose from:
- San Marco
- Jacksonville Beach
The restaurant serves a variety of smoked meats, including brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and sausage. These are complemented by Southern-inspired sides like mac and cheese, collard greens, and baked beans.
