I’ve been to Orlando more than twenty times in the past ten years. I’ve never been for a birthday specifically, but we have celebrated plenty of special occasions there, including our wedding and multiple anniversaries. I know which spots actually deliver when the day needs to count.

Methodology: I haven’t specifically celebrated a birthday in Orlando, but I’ve been for enough special occasions to know which venues deliver. 7 of these 12 picks are venues I’ve been to; the other 5 are based on extensive research, competitor verification, and conversations with people who have visited.

1. Walt Disney World

šŸ’µ Cost: From $119/day per adult (single park); Park Hopper adds $80-$100/day
ā° Time: 1 Day per park, 4-7 days for the full resort
šŸ† Best for: Under-10s and lifelong Disney fans

Walt Disney World is the obvious choice for a birthday if you’ve got kids under ten or are lifelong Disney fans. The resort is made up of four theme parks:

  1. Magic Kingdom
  2. EPCOT
  3. Hollywood Studios
  4. Animal Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is the Disney park with Cinderella’s Castle, fireworks and traditional rides. EPCOT is a great choice for adult fans of Disney with World Showcase. Animal Kingdom suits older kids with Avatar: Pandora, while Hollywood Studios is great for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Disney hands out a free birthday pin at Guest Relations. Wear it and cast members wish you happy birthday all day.

Walt Disney World also has two water parks:

  1. Typhoon Lagoon
  2. Blizzard Beach

Typhoon Lagoon is the gentler, family-friendly park. Blizzard Beach is the bigger-thrill park with Summit Plummet. For a birthday, Typhoon Lagoon usually wins because the Surf Pool gives groups something to do together.

To enhance a birthday trip to Walt Disney World, consider staying on-site. There are more than 25 Disney-owned hotels, including budget options such as Pop Century or higher-end Deluxe Resorts such as the Grand Floridian & Spa. On-site guests get free transport to all four parks plus 30 minutes early entry every park day.

2. Universal Orlando Resort

šŸ’µ Cost: From $124/day per adult (1-park); Park-to-Park adds ~$70/day
ā° Time: 1-2 days per park; 4-7 days for the full resort
šŸ† Best for: Teens, thrill-seekers, and Harry Potter fans

Universal Orlando is the obvious choice for a birthday if you’ve got teens, thrill-seekers, or Harry Potter fans. We’ve been more than twelve times across the four parks. The resort is made up of three theme parks and one water park:

  1. Universal Studios Florida
  2. Universal Islands of Adventure
  3. Epic Universe
  4. Volcano Bay

Universal Studios is calmer with more shows and movie-themed rides. Islands of Adventure has the strongest coaster lineup (VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s, Incredible Hulk). The Wizarding World is split across both sides (Diagon Alley at Universal Studios, Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure) and the Hogwarts Express connects them if you have Park-to-Park tickets.

Epic Universe opened in May 2025 with the Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon, and the Dark Universe lands. It’s the third gate at the Universal complex and a strong birthday day on its own.

The Mystic Fountain at Islands of Adventure responds when you tell it it’s your birthday. Stand directly in front and announce it.

To enhance a birthday trip to Universal Orlando, consider staying on-site. There are more than 10 on-site hotels including budget options such as Endless Summer Surfside Inn or higher-end Premier hotels such as Hard Rock Hotel. Premier hotel guests get free Universal Express Pass for skip-the-line access, which is the strongest birthday perk in Orlando.

Stay at a Premier hotel for the night before a birthday park day. The free Express Pass is unlimited and lets the birthday person ride every coaster as many times as they want without queueing.

3. SeaWorld Orlando

šŸ’µ Cost: From $65/day per adult (online, varies by date)
ā° Time: Half day to full day
šŸ† Best for: Coaster fans and families who want shorter park days than Disney or Universal

SeaWorld isn’t as intense or expensive as Disney or Universal, but the rollercoasters are still impressive with Mako, Manta, Kraken and Pipeline. This attraction is more than just a theme park and features a range of aquatic animal shows with dolphins and orcas.

For a birthday specifically, Sharks Underwater Grill is a great restaurant choice. Here you’ll have dinner inside a 600,000-gallon shark tank. Dine with Orcas is the upgrade worth considering for a milestone birthday. It seats you at a private table next to the orca tank with a multi-course meal.

The annual pass works out cheaper than 2 day tickets, so if you’re considering more than one SeaWorld day across a longer trip, the maths shifts to the pass.

4. Discovery Cove

šŸ’µ Cost: From $199 per adult (snorkel only); from $329 with dolphin swim
ā° Time: Full day
šŸ† Best for: Splurge birthdays and dolphin-swim bucket-list days

Discovery Cove is the obvious choice for a splurge birthday in Orlando. It’s an all-inclusive park that includes:

  • Dolphin swim
  • Snorkel in the Grand Reef
  • Aviary & Lazy River
  • Food & drink
  • Loungers & towels

Entry into Discovery Cove is capped, so it never feels crowded. Birthday packages are available and include a card from the dolphin team and a dedicated birthday wristband. Upgrades like the SeaVenture underwater helmet walk make the day even more memorable.

Book at least 30 days ahead for dolphin swim availability and check for the SeaWorld + Aquatica + Discovery Cove combo. The combo ticket effectively makes the Aquatica and SeaWorld days free if you were planning to do them anyway.

5. Kennedy Space Center

šŸ’µ Cost: $77 per adult / $67 per child (3-11); under-3s free
ā° Time: Full day; 60-minute drive from Orlando
šŸ† Best for: Curious kids, adult space fans

Kennedy Space Center sits on the Atlantic Coast around an hour’s drive from Orlando. I went for the first time a couple of years ago, and was blown away by how much there is to see here.

I’m not a big space fan and only expected to spend half a day here, but we ended up staying from opening until close and still didn’t see everything. The highlights here include the Saturn V hall, the Atlantis shuttle exhibit and the Astronaut Encounter Q&A.

Check the launch schedule for your dates and book the Feel the Heat or LCC viewing add-on if a launch is happening. These are separate from the standard day ticket and sell out for high-profile missions.

6. Disney Springs

šŸ’µ Cost: Free entry; restaurants $20-$80+ per person
ā° Time: 3-6 hours; can fill a full evening
šŸ† Best for: Shopping & family meals

Disney Springs is the free-to-visit entertainment district at Walt Disney World featuring restaurants, bars, shops and activities. The restaurants here vary from high-end to casual depending on your budget.

My wife and I got married in Orlando in 2019, and after the ceremony went for a family meal at The Boathouse. The waterfront location especially makes it a great choice for a special occasion. Other highlights include:

  • Wine Bar George
  • Coca-Cola Rooftop Beverage Bar
  • House of Blues (Sunday Gospel Brunch)
  • AMC Disney Springs dine-in cinema
  • Splitsville Luxury Lanes

Parking here is free, as is resort transportation for guests staying in a Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

7. Universal CityWalk

šŸ’µ Cost: Free entry; venue pricing varies
ā° Time: 2-5 hours
šŸ† Best for: Adult or older-teen birthdays at Universal

Universal CityWalk is the Universal version of Disney Springs. Although this free-to-visit entertainment complex is much smaller, it’s still got a lot to offer, especially for teens and adults. Popular spots include:

  • Toothsome Chocolate Emporium
  • BigFire: BBQ + smokehouse
  • Hard Rock CafĆ©
  • Hollywood Drive-In Mini Golf
  • Voodoo Doughnut
  • CityWalk’s Rising Star

Attached to the Hard Rock CafƩ is Hard Rock Live, a 3,000-capacity venue that hosts concerts by major artists most weekends. Tickets are independent of Universal admission.

8. ICON Park

šŸ’µ Cost: Free to walk around; individual attractions $20-$35
ā° Time: 3-5 hours
šŸ† Best for: Family birthdays with mixed-age groups

ICON Park is a great choice for a family birthday with mixed-age groups. On International Drive, this free-to-visit entertainment space has five paid attractions:

  1. The Wheel (400 feet, the second-tallest observation wheel in the US)
  2. SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium
  3. Madame Tussauds Orlando
  4. Museum of Illusions
  5. Chocolate Museum & CafƩ

We’ve been to SEA LIFE, Madame Tussauds and the Museum of Illusions here as a family. All of these are indoor attractions, which is handy if it’s raining. The combo ticket is the cheapest route across multiple venues.

ICON Park has restaurants on-site, and International Drive is home to many of the best family-friendly restaurants in Orlando.

9. Crayola Experience

šŸ’µ Cost: From $29.99 per person (online); under-2s free
ā° Time: 3-4 hours
šŸ† Best for: Toddler-to-pre-teen birthday parties

If you’re celebrating a toddler’s birthday in Orlando, The Crayola Experience inside The Florida Mall is a great choice. We visited with our eldest son Oliver when he was 18 months and had the best time.

Activities here include making your own crayon with your name on the wrapper, melted-wax art, the colour-mixing studio and the giant model crayon photo wall. Each activity gets stamped on a hand card to track which ones the kids have done.

Buy tickets online rather than at the door. The online price is cheaper and it can be hard to get a walk-in space on the weekend.

10. Dinner Shows

šŸ’µ Cost: From $66 per person
ā° Time: 2-3 hours including pre-show
šŸ† Best for: Birthdays that need a fixed memorable evening

Orlando has several dinner shows which are a great choice for a memorable birthday evening. Three options stand out:

  • Medieval Times in Kissimmee features knights, horses, jousting and themed dinner served by hand. Best for ages 5-12.
  • Pirates Dinner Adventure on International Drive is more theatrical. Full ship interior, indoor lagoon, a structured pirate-rescue plotline.
  • Cirque du Soleil “Drawn to Life” runs as a residency at Disney Springs. Closer to a true Broadway-scale show.

All three let you flag a birthday in advance, and most include a free birthday extra (cake slice, pin, on-stage moment).

11. Busch Gardens Tampa

šŸ’µ Cost: From $89/day per adult (single-day)
ā° Time: Full day; 90-minute drive from Orlando
šŸ† Best for: Coaster-led birthdays and African-themed animal experiences

Busch Gardens Tampa is a 90-minute drive from Orlando and a great choice if you’ve got coaster fans in the family. Iron Gwazi (North America’s tallest, fastest, steepest hybrid coaster), SheiKra, Cheetah Hunt, Tigris and Falcon’s Fury sit alongside the Serengeti Plain animal sections, where the train and the safari add-on get you close to giraffes, zebras and rhinos.

The SeaWorld + Busch Gardens 2-park bundle is the cheapest way to do both parks across a longer trip. The parks are 90 minutes apart, so you can’t combine them into one day, but the bundle saves about 30% versus two single-park tickets.

12. LEGOLAND Florida

šŸ’µ Cost: From $94/day per adult / $84/day per child
ā° Time: Full day; 45-minute drive from Orlando to Winter Haven
šŸ† Best for: LEGO-fan birthdays, ages 5-10 specifically

LEGOLAND Florida is the obvious choice for a LEGO fan’s birthday, which is about a 45-minute drive from Orlando. This theme park is best for kids aged 5 to 10 and there not much for older kids to do here, so it might not be the best choice if you’ve got kids of multiple ages.

The major attractions here include Miniland USA (scale LEGO replicas of US landmarks), LEGO MOVIE WORLD and the Pirates’ Cove Live Water Ski Show.

There’s an on-site water park, open from Memorial Day to September, and the two on-site hotels (the LEGOLAND Hotel and the Beach Retreat) can turn the day into an overnight birthday stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions readers ask me about celebrating a birthday in Orlando:

What’s the best Orlando theme park for a birthday?

Magic Kingdom for younger kids, Universal Studios for teens and adults. Both parks recognise birthday celebrations with free pins at guest services. For an over-the-top birthday option, book a character meal at Cinderella’s Royal Table inside the Magic Kingdom castle or the Wantilan Luau at Loews Royal Pacific.

Can you celebrate a birthday at Walt Disney World without buying park tickets?

Yes. Disney Springs is free to enter and has dozens of restaurants, the AMC dine-in cinema, Splitsville bowling, and the Aerophile balloon. House of Blues runs Sunday Gospel Brunch. Some Disney resort hotels accept dining reservations from non-guests. None of these need a park ticket to access.

What’s a good adult Orlando birthday?

Disney Springs has more adult venues than people realise. Think the Coca-Cola rooftop bar, Wine Bar George, and dinner at California Grill atop the Contemporary timed to the Magic Kingdom fireworks. Universal CityWalk’s Hard Rock Live and Toothsome work well for evening celebrations. Lakeridge Winery in Clermont runs adult tasting tours 30 minutes from Orlando.

How early should you book Orlando birthday experiences?

Disney character meals book up to 60 days ahead. Discovery Cove dolphin swims need 30 days minimum. Dinner shows (Medieval Times, Pirates) typically have same-week availability but cost less when booked 7+ days out. Theme park admission is fine on the day; ride reservations need same-morning timing.

Do Disney and Universal give anything free for birthdays?

Both parks hand out free birthday pins at guest services. Wear it and cast members or team members will wish you happy birthday throughout the day. Some character meets do an extra greeting. Universal’s Mystic Fountain at Islands of Adventure responds when you tell it it’s your birthday.

What’s a chill Orlando birthday for someone who doesn’t like crowds?

Skip the parks. The Disney Springs boat from any Disney resort gets you to the entertainment district by water, calmer than the buses. Universal CityWalk on a weeknight is reliably quiet. ICON Park’s Wheel runs sunset rides that beat the daytime queue. All three give you Orlando atmosphere without the headcount.

Is Orlando a good UK family birthday destination?

Yes. UK families regularly time Orlando trips around a child’s birthday because the parks, dinner shows, and water parks all do something special for the day. The 8-hour flight is the only drawback, so plan a 7+ night trip to absorb the jet lag and stretch the celebration over multiple days.
