International Drive vs Lake Buena Vista: Which Is Best for Your Orlando Trip? (2026)

I’ve been to Orlando more than ten times across the last fifteen years, with and without kids, and I’ve stayed in hotels in both Lake Buena Vista and on International Drive.

Past stays include Universal’s Endless Summer Resort just off International Drive in June 2023, and Shades of Green inside Walt Disney World in March 2024, a US Armed Forces resort we could only access because we were staying with friends who serve in the US Navy.

Lake Buena Vista is the area Walt Disney World owns and operates. It has its own police, its own fire station, and the hotel options inside the boundary are either Disney-run or one of seven Hotel Plaza Boulevard properties operating with Disney’s blessing.

International Drive (or “I-Drive” as locals call it) is the eleven-mile commercial strip running north-south through tourist Orlando. It links Universal, SeaWorld, ICON Park, and the Convention Center, with hundreds of hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

Lake Buena Vista at a Glance

Lake Buena Vista is an area Walt Disney World owns and operates, which means it works best for trips where Disney is the prime focus rather than just one of many activities.

You’re very much in a resort bubble here, with nothing within walking distance, so going off-site means renting a car or taking an Uber. That makes you more likely to use the on-site shops and restaurants, which charge resort prices, so you’ll often spend more here than you would on International Drive.

International Drive at a Glance

International Drive is an eleven-mile commercial strip linking Universal, SeaWorld, ICON Park, and the Convention Center, which means staying here works best for trips that cover multiple parks, focus on dining and entertainment, or run on a tighter budget.

Unlike Lake Buena Vista’s resort bubble, International Drive is a strip you can walk down, so a hire car or Uber isn’t a necessity. It’s also easy to get to budget restaurants and walk to a CVS instead of paying resort prices.

Best for a Walt Disney World Focused Trip

If 80% or more of your trip is at Walt Disney World then Lake Buena Vista is the best choice. Staying in Lake Buena Vista gives you access to perks no I-Drive hotel can match:

• Frequent Disney park shuttles running from before park-open to after closing
• Access to early morning entry and extended evening hours (select resorts)

You’ll also save 30 minutes or more per day travelling to and from the parks, which can be a welcome relief after a long day.

The trade-off is cost. A four-star hotel on Disney property typically runs £100-£200 more per night than a comparable four-star hotel on International Drive. If your trip is built around Disney the benefits are well worth the cost. If you’re not, it’s money wasted.

In March 2024 we stayed at Shades of Green inside Walt Disney World, a US Armed Forces resort we could only access because we were visiting friends in the US Navy.

We’ve stayed on-site at Walt Disney World on previous trips and Shades of Green was a very different experience in style and feel, but the practicality of staying in Lake Buena Vista was very much the same.

Best for Universal, Epic Universe, or Multi-Park Trips

If you plan to visit Universal Orlando, Volcano Bay, or the new Epic Universe park, or are doing a Disney and Universal split, then International Drive is the better base.

International Drive sits between the Universal and Disney sides of Orlando. If you stay in a hotel near Universal Boulevard or Westwood Boulevard, you’re:

• 5 to 15 minutes from Universal
• 10 to 15 minutes from SeaWorld
• 15 to 25 minutes from Disney

Lake Buena Vista, by contrast, is a 25-30 minute drive from Universal. Some hotels on International Drive also run free shuttles to Universal, SeaWorld, and Disney, which is useful if you’re not hiring a car. The shuttle situation isn’t perfect (limited times and most are advance-booking only), but the option exists.

We stay in and around International Drive on most of our trips to Orlando. I’ve stayed at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort four times, plus Universal’s Aventura Hotel, Ramada Plaza Resort, and Universal’s Endless Summer Resort to name just a few.

Best for a Tighter Budget

The cheapest three-star hotels on International Drive cost around $100 / £70 per night in shoulder season. The cheapest three-star hotels in Lake Buena Vista are often closer to $170 / £120.

That nightly gap of $70 / £50 isn’t huge for a couple of nights. However, on a typical UK family trip of ten to fourteen nights, or on a strict budget, that can add-up to $700 / £500.

Some of that extra money is paying for the convenience of being inside Disney, which can be worth it if Disney is the core focus of your trip. That said, on a tight budget, the freedom of International Drive means you’re not forced into theme-park or hotel-restaurant pricing every meal.

Most of the hidden costs of an Orlando holiday (resort fees, parking fees, character-meal upcharges, in-park drink markups) are easier to control on I-Drive because you have alternatives.

Best for Travelling Without a Hire Car

If you don’t want to hire a car in Orlando, International Drive is the more practical base. The exception is a Disney-only trip, where the shuttles from a hotel in Lake Buena Vista are far better than anything on I-Drive.

There are several ways to get around Orlando from International Drive without hiring a car:

1. Walking: Depending on the distance and humidity, you can walk to select attractions from a hotel on International Drive.
2. I-RIDE Trolley: This bus runs from 8am to 10:30pm along almost the entire strip, with single rides at $2.50 and day passes at $7.50.
3. Free hotel shuttles: Some hotels on International Drive run free shuttles to Universal, SeaWorld, and Disney.
4. Rideshare: Uber and Lyft both operate in Orlando and are ideal for longer journeys such as to the airport or major theme parks.

Best for Dining and Walkability

International Drive is one of the only areas in Orlando where you can walk out of your hotel and reach 30+ restaurants, several attractions, and a CVS or Walgreens within ten minutes. That doesn’t sound impressive until you’ve done a 12-hour park day with three kids and someone needs paracetamol at 9pm.

Depending on where you’re staying within Lake Buena Vista, you might be able to walk to Disney Springs (Hotel Plaza Boulevard properties are particularly close). However, you’ll still have no walkable pharmacy options and still be paying resort prices for food.

Best for Five-Star Luxury and Resort Atmosphere

LLake Buena Vista is the best place to stay if you want five-star luxury resorts. There are several here, including:

1. Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World
2. Waldorf Astoria Orlando
3. Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes

These resorts feel like destinations in their own right rather than hotels you sleep in between park days. They’re worth booking for an anniversary, honeymoon, or once-in-a-lifetime trip where the property itself is part of the experience.

International Drive does have some good four-star hotels like Hilton Orlando and Rosen Shingle Creek, but no five-star resort with the same scale or pool complex.

The Verdict

Lake Buena Vista and International Drive are five miles apart, so this isn’t a make-or-break decision. Most readers would have a great Orlando trip from either base.

If you’re still on the fence: Lake Buena Vista if you’re just going to Orlando for Disney, International Drive for everything else. That covers about 90% of the scenarios I’d point a friend toward.
