I’ve stayed in Kissimmee and on International Drive across more than ten Orlando trips, and the right pick depends almost entirely on if you’re hiring a car. The two areas are five to eleven miles apart, depending on where on International Drive you stay.
Kissimmee is the vacation-home capital of central Florida, sits closest to Walt Disney World, and works best for longer family stays with kitchens, private pools and laundry. International Drive is an eleven-mile hotel-and-restaurant strip with the I-Ride Trolley running its full length, Universal Orlando at one end and SeaWorld at the other, and the easiest base in Orlando for car-free trips.
Short on time? Stay in Kissimmee if you’re a family of four or more, want a vacation home with a private pool, or your trip is mainly Walt Disney World. Stay on International Drive if you’re hotel-based, not hiring a car, or your trip leans Universal and SeaWorld. The two areas are close enough that neither choice is wrong.
Kissimmee at a Glance
Kissimmee has the largest number of vacation homes in the Orlando area. The city sits in a central location for visiting Disney, Universal and SeaWorld, with stores and restaurants close by. However, staying here means you’ll need to hire a car or rely heavily on Ubers.

best for themed resort
Margaritaville Resort Orlando
Themed resort with on-site water park access, a Promenade entertainment district, and family suites that sleep up to six. Strong pick for families wanting a vacation-feel base without renting a private home.

best for vacation homes
Reunion Resort
Vacation villas with private pools, three signature golf courses, an on-site water park, and central Kissimmee location. The closest you’ll get to a private vacation home with full resort amenities behind it.

best for kid suites
Holiday Inn Resort Orlando Suites Waterpark
Kid-suite rooms with bunk-bed nooks, an on-site water park, and an all-inclusive option that bundles meals. Built specifically for families with younger kids who want amenities without the Disney premium.
International Drive at a Glance
International Drive is an eleven-mile commercial strip linking Universal, SeaWorld, ICON Park and the Convention Center. Staying here works best for trips that cover multiple parks, focus on dining and entertainment, or run on a tighter budget.
Unlike Kissimmee, International Drive is a strip you can walk down, so a hire car or Uber isn’t a necessity. It’s also easy to walk to budget restaurants and a CVS instead of paying resort prices.

best on I-Drive
Hilton Orlando
The largest hotel on International Drive, sitting across from the Convention Center with its own lazy river, multiple pools and on-site restaurants.

best for families
Floridays Resort Orlando
Two-bedroom condo-style suites with full kitchens, two pools and free shuttles to the major theme parks, on south International Drive close to SeaWorld and Aquatica.

best for Universal
Rosen Inn International
Budget I-Drive hotel near SeaWorld and the Convention Center with two heated pools, no resort fees, a free shuttle to Universal and a stop on the I-Ride Trolley line.
Best for a Walt Disney World Focused Trip
Kissimmee is a 15 to 25 minute drive from Walt Disney World while International Drive is 15 to 30 minutes depending on where you stay.
For a trip where visiting Walt Disney World is the main focus, Kissimmee saves you 10 to 20 minutes off every park-day round trip before we even consider traffic. That time compounds significantly across a multi-day visit.
International Drive is fine for days at Disney as part of a larger trip, but if you’re planning on spending the majority of your time at Walt Disney World then Kissimmee’s proximity makes it the better choice.
🏆 our verdict: kissimmee

Best for a Universal Orlando Focused Trip
Universal Orlando sits at the northern end of International Drive. From a hotel at that end you’re 5 to 15 minutes from the resort entrance. From Kissimmee you’re looking at 25 to 30 minutes each way regardless of where you’re staying.

For a trip that’s Universal-focused, International Drive saves you considerable driving time. Many International Drive hotels also run free shuttles, so you skip the daily parking fee too.
The strongest pick for Universal is one of Universal’s own on-site hotels, which come with Universal Early Park Admission and aren’t as expensive as the ones at Walt Disney World. That said, among Kissimmee and International Drive specifically, International Drive wins easily on proximity.
🏆 our verdict: international drive
Best for Travel Without a Hire Car
Being from the UK it took me around ten years to build up the courage to drive in Orlando. So I know firsthand what visiting without a hire car is like and how much your choice of base actually matters.

International Drive is best for car-free trips. The I-Ride Trolley runs the length of the strip from 8:00am to 10:30pm daily, the LYNX 8 bus runs the length of International Drive (with onward transfers to Disney Springs and central Orlando), and most hotels run free shuttles to the major theme parks. Hundreds of family-friendly restaurants and shops sit on the strip itself, walkable from any International Drive hotel.
Kissimmee, by contrast, is built around the assumption you’ll drive. Public transport is limited, restaurants and shops are spread along multi-lane highways without sidewalks, and an Uber or Lyft from a Kissimmee vacation home to a Disney park can run $25 to $40 each way.
🏆 our verdict: international drive
Best for Longer Stays and Larger Families
Kissimmee has more vacation rentals than any other area in central Florida, with three, four and five-bedroom homes featuring full kitchens, private pools, game rooms and laundry. For a family of five or more, or any trip longer than seven nights, the cost of a vacation home per person per night is typically cheaper than two hotel rooms on International Drive.
International Drive is hotel territory. Some Universal-adjacent properties offer family suites that sleep six, and a handful of condo-hotel options exist along the strip, but the inventory of full vacation homes is essentially zero. For multigenerational trips or stays where you want to cook some meals to manage costs, Kissimmee is the best choice.
🏆 our verdict: kissimmee
Best for Dining and Walkability
International Drive has hundreds of branded chains and dozens of independent restaurants, all on or one block off the strip. From any International Drive hotel, you’re typically only a five to fifteen minute walk from at least twenty dining options across price tiers and cuisines.
Kissimmee’s restaurants are spread along Highway 192 and US-27, mostly clustered near the larger resort gates and Old Town Kissimmee. Walking between them isn’t practical, so you’re driving each evening, and parking varies. There’s plenty of choice, but the walkable density that International Drive offers doesn’t exist in Kissimmee.
🏆 our verdict: international drive

Best for Budget Travel
Before having kids, my wife and I travelled to Orlando on a strict budget several times. Since there were just the two of us and neither of us dared drive, a budget hotel on International Drive was the best option.
Depending on the time of year you can get a hotel on International Drive for $80 to $120 a night, although paying a little extra for a hotel with free shuttles to the theme parks can help reduce the amount you need to spend on Ubers.

Now that we have kids and drive, Kissimmee is the cheaper option. A three-bedroom vacation home with a private pool typically costs between $150 and $250 a night, which is cheaper per person than two hotel rooms on International Drive and lets you cook meals to cut food costs.
🏆 our verdict: kissimmee

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kissimmee or International Drive closer to Walt Disney World?
Kissimmee is closer. The Walt Disney World gates are 15 to 25 minutes from most Kissimmee hotels and vacation homes, while International Drive sits 15 to 30 minutes away depending on if you’re at the southern end (closer) or northern end (further). For a Disney-led trip, Kissimmee saves real driving time across a week.
Can you stay on International Drive without a hire car?
Yes, more easily than anywhere else in Orlando. The I-Ride Trolley runs the full eleven-mile length of the strip from 8:00am to 10:30pm daily for a few dollars, the LYNX 8 bus runs the length of the strip with onward transfers to Disney Springs, and most International Drive hotels run free shuttles to Disney, Universal and SeaWorld. International Drive is the strongest car-free base in Orlando.
Is Kissimmee cheaper than International Drive?
It depends on your group size. For couples, International Drive hotel competition pushes rates 5 to 10% below Kissimmee equivalents, and you save on a hire car if you skip one. For families of four or more, Kissimmee’s vacation homes (with kitchens and private pools) come out significantly cheaper per person on a multi-night stay.
Which is better for Universal Orlando?
International Drive, easily. Universal sits at the northern end of International Drive itself, so I-Drive hotels are 5 to 15 minutes from Universal vs 25 to 30 minutes from Kissimmee. The single strongest Universal-focused pick is actually Universal’s own on-site hotels (which earn Universal Early Park Admission), but among Kissimmee and I-Drive specifically, I-Drive wins on proximity.
Are there vacation homes on International Drive?
Almost none. International Drive is built around hotels, condo-hotels and suite-style hotels. Family suites that sleep six exist at a handful of Universal-adjacent hotels, but full three or four-bedroom vacation homes with private pools are essentially a Kissimmee product, not an International Drive one.
Which is better for a first-time visitor?
For most first-time visitors with a hire car booked and Disney as the headline, Kissimmee is the lower-friction default. Vacation homes give you more space and a private pool for similar money to two hotel rooms, kitchens cut food costs across a longer stay, and the area is closest to the Walt Disney World gates. Choose International Drive only if you’re not hiring a car or your trip is Universal-led.
