Center Parcs in Winter: Is It Worth Visiting?

I’ve been visiting Center Parcs for the best part of a decade. I’ve visited as a couple, with friends and family and now with kids. I’ve also visited during different seasons; especially in winter where it’s typically a little cheaper than in the summer months.

For me, there’s nothing quite like lighting the fire in the lodge on a cold evening. It makes the whole break feel incredibly cosy. That said, with young children I’ve found the rain more of a frustration than I used to.

What Is Center Parcs Like in Winter?

The core experience of Center Parcs is pretty much identical year-round. So no matter what time of year you visit you’ll always have:

  • Freedom to explore the forest
  • Access to the Subtropical Swimming Paradise
  • Bookable activities including the Aqua Sana Forest Spa
  • On-site restaurants

However, depending on exactly when you visit you may also find:

  • Winter Wonderland: This festive event runs from early November to early January. During this time the village is transformed with light installations, Christmas decorations and a range of seasonal activities.

  • Winter Forest Lights: The light installations from Winter Wonderland remain until February and are remarketed into the Winter Forest Lights, which are available from dusk every evening.

I’ve found Center Parcs villages are noticeably less crowded outside of school holidays in winter. A midweek term-time break in November, January or February is the quietest Center Parcs experience you can have.

However, even in the school holidays you can find a slower pace of life in the village than at any other point in the year. So if you’re looking for a truly relaxing time, or a moment to reset either before or after Christmas, this is a perfect option.

What’s Good About Center Parcs in Winter

Here’s some of the greatest things I’ve found when visiting Center Parcs in winter:

  • Forest: If like me, exploring the forest is the reason you go to Center Parcs, then winter is the best time to experience it.

  • Subtropical Swimming Paradise: Heated to 29.5°C year-round, I’ve found the outdoor pool area in particular feels extra special on a cold evening.

  • Lodges: In my opinion winter makes Center Parcs accommodation feel very atmospheric. You’ll also likely spend more time here during winter making it a central part of the experience rather than just somewhere to sleep.

  • Prices: Outside of Winter Wonderland, Christmas and February half-term, winter is the cheapest time to visit Center Parcs.

  • Crowds: I’ve found Center Parcs to be noticeably quieter in winter than in summer. The pool is less busy, restaurants are easier to book and the forest paths are largely your own.

  • Spa: The Aqua Sana Forest Spa is excellent year-round but particularly good in winter. A warm spa session on a cold January afternoon is one of the best things Center Parcs offers.

What’s Not So Good About Center Parcs in Winter

Here’s some of the worst things I’ve found when visiting Center Parcs in winter:

  • Weather: Center Parcs villages are set across around 400 acres, which means you’ll be doing a lot of walking or cycling from your lodge to the activity areas. Doing this in the rain, which is more prominent in winter, isn’t always fun.

  • Watersports: Most outdoor watersports such as kayaking, paddleboarding, electric boats are either unavailable or have reduced availability in winter.

  • Darkness: It’s dark by 4pm in November and December. This isn’t always a problem, especially with the light installations but it does mean the outdoor experience is shorter than in summer.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Center Parcs in Winter?

Here are some of the best times to visit Center Parcs in winter:

  • Best Value: January and early February, midweek in term time. Quietest, cheapest and still beautiful. Winter Forest Lights is included.

  • Best For Families with Young Children: Early to mid November. The festive atmosphere is fully in place but prices are lower than December and it’s quieter too.

  • Most Magical: Any break where it snows. This is obviously unpredictable but a snowed-in Center Parcs is an extraordinary experience.

Christmas week, New Year and February half-term are the three most expensive breaks of the winter season.

Is Center Parcs Worth It in Winter?

Whether Center Parcs is worth it in winter depends on two things:

  1. What time in winter
  2. The Price

A midweek term-time break in January or February is Center Parcs at its most cost-effective and its most atmospheric. The forest is beautiful, the site is quiet, the pool is wonderful and the lodge experience is at its best. This is the winter break I’d recommend without hesitation.

Winter Wonderland is fantastic. The light installations are well done and the festive atmosphere is real but it comes at a price. For families with young children who can experience the magic of Christmas in a forest setting, it’s worth it but for couples or groups without children, the standard winter experience at a lower price point is better value.

Christmas and New Year are the hardest to recommend on value grounds. The experience is special but the prices are the highest of the year and the site is at its busiest.
